My Hong Kong Turns 5

Star Ferry

“It is important to always read a bedtime story… else how would your dreams know where to begin.”

Five years ago today, we launched My Hong Kong at The Fringe Club in Hong Kong.

That evening we shared Ralph Kiggell’s artwork in an exhibition of limited edition prints from My Hong Kong, we also shared champagne among friends, and signed many books.

Ralph Kiggell’s original, and striking artwork gave me the confidence that we could engage children and adults into story.  The Star Ferry (pictured) as the first woodblock print made by Ralph for the book.  I was immediately enthused.   Seline Wu’s graphic design skills helped to give the book a slightly vintage aesthetic. My Hong Kong  was a project that evolved over more than three years as my corporate life kept me busy. We launched My Hong Kong ten weeks before the arrival of my son… he was a catalyst to ensure that we finished the book!

Little did I imagine that our book might one day become a little school stage performance, thanks to some very creative teachers at Glenealy school.  An amateur video can be seen here (watch for the jumping in puddles!)

Thank you for making My Hong Kong an ongoing bestseller.  It has allowed me to keep dreaming, writing and collaborating with artists.  I do love it.
